AIWF Foundation Scholarship for Food Writing
This 2010 AIWF Foundation Scholarship for Food Writing is valued at $2,500.00. This award is presented in honor of Julia Child, a long-time attendee of the Symposium. The awardee must be a knowledgeable cook whose writing voice empowers the reader in the kitchen. The awardee will be chosen for demonstrated clarity and assuredness in communicating the processes and the joy of cooking. The award covers all costs of attending the Symposium, including lodging, and may be used toward transportation costs. Note: In addition to writing samples, applicants for this scholarship must submit a maximum one-page CV or biography.)
AIWF Foundation Scholarship for Recipe Writing
This 2010 AIWF Foundation Scholarship for Recipe Writing is valued at $2,500.00. This award is presented in honor of Julia Child, a long-time attendee of the Symposium. The awardee will be chosen for demonstrated excellence in writing all aspects of recipes, including techniques, headnotes, and ingredient explanations. Recipe copy must bring the reader along with clarity, serving to not only provide the tools to accomplish recipes but also to teach and empower readers through an understanding of how and why. The award covers all costs of attending the Symposium, including lodging, and may be used toward transportation costs.
Apicius Scholarship
This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a professional food writer whose prose rings with a clear voice and reflects the delicious joys of the table. In the spirit of Apicius, the first Roman to write cookbooks, the goal is to grant this award to that writer whose work will stand the test of time.
Chronicle Books Scholarship
This $500 scholarship is awarded to a professional food writer who demonstrates an ability to write recipes and recipe headnotes that are clear and effective with a voice that is personal, authoritative and original.
The Greenbrier Scholarship
The Greenbrier offers a full scholarship to one writer attending the 2010 Symposium for Professional Food Writers. This award covers all Symposium costs from September 12-16, excluding travel. The mission of this award is to recognize food writing talent and ability, with an emphasis on the process of merging description and clarity in writing.
Leite's Culinaria Scholarship for Narrative Food Writing
This full scholarship will be awarded to a food writer whose work is narrative in nature. This award covers all symposium costs for the 2010 Symposium for Professional Food Writers. The goal of the scholarship is to promote literary writing (essays, food novels, or narrative nonfiction) that has a strong expressive voice, deftly uses the tools of good narrative writing--action, character, setting, description, mood, etc.--and offers a unique perspective on the world of food. Note: The winner will be required to write an original piece to be published and promoted on Leite's Culinaria.
James Patrick McDermott Scholarship for Social Change through Food Writing
This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a food writer attending the 2010 Symposium for Professional Food Writers whose writing brings social and economic justice to the table in meaningful ways. That writer seeks and tells stories that need telling; stories that build bridges; stories that fill in gaps in our history. Judges will seek writing that opens eyes and doors to help us to connect and to treat each other right. This award is in memory of James Patrick McDermott, father of food writer Nancie McDermott. He loved to eat and to celebrate. He welcomed as many people as possible for joyful gatherings around food. He lived 89 years with an enormous and ever-generous heart, teaching by his example that everyone has dignity and worth, that there is enough, and that we all have a place at the table.
James Peterson Food Writing Passion Scholarship
This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a food writer whose writing ties food with life and with a certain passion in being alive. The main criterion for this award is written excellence and "just good fun" in writing about food and drink.
Fred Thompson Scholarship
This $500 scholarship will be awarded to a food writer whose work is noted for particular excellence in clarity and balance.
